Disarmament Commission Topic 1:

Regulating the militarization of the Arctic regions

The Arctic is emerging as a region of growing geopolitical significance due to climate change, resource accessibility, and strategic positioning. As melting ice opens new maritime routes and uncovers valuable natural resources, Arctic nations and global powers have increasingly expanded their military presence in the region. This growing militarization raises concerns about regional stability, environmental protection, and the potential for conflict escalation. Effective regulation is essential to maintaining the Arctic as a zone of peace and scientific collaboration, while preventing it from becoming a stage for strategic rivalry.

Disarmament Commission Topic 2:

Implementing Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: Achieving Comprehensive Nuclear Disarmament

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) remains a cornerstone of global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and advance the goal of comprehensive nuclear disarmament. Despite its near-universal adoption, challenges persist in fully implementing its provisions, as geopolitical tensions, modernization of nuclear arsenals, and lack of progress on disarmament continue to undermine trust in the treaty’s long-term effectiveness. Upholding the NPT and advancing comprehensive nuclear disarmament are essential to reducing global security risks and ensuring a safer, more stable international order.

Vito Qian - President

Hello Delegates!

I am Vito Qian, a year 11. I am honored to be able to serve as your President in the Disarmament Committee for DISMUN I.

This is my 5th year participating in MUN and my 8th conference. I will look forward to chairing the topic of "Regulating the militarization of the Arctic and Antarctic regions" and seeing delegates collaborate, debate and come up with well written and well-crafted resolutions.

I hope the conference will be an incredible event for all and one fitting for the inaugural DISMUN conference. I hope to see everyone soon!

Arnav Chhaparwal - Deputy President

Greetings, all delegates!

My name is Arnav, and I am in Year 11 at DCSPD. I have been involved in MUN since 6th grade and have participated in 6 conferences till now - for this conference and committee, I am honored to serve as the Deputy President of your committee.

MUN has so far been a pivotal part of my life in the last few years, and I believe that every conference I have been to has become a special memory for me. In my eyes, this activity brings a variety of students, some experienced and some not as much, to collaborate and discuss significant global issues, providing all delegates the opportunity to share their personal opinions and listen to those of others, cultivating growth for all participants. It's an activity that I not only as a great opportunity to improve your confidence and public speaking, but also one in which delegates can meet new people and develop lasting relationships.

My topic of specialization will be 'Implementing Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT): Achieving Comprehensive Nuclear Disarmament' - Article VI and the NPT are the cornerstone of global arms control and non-proliferation efforts, with its main goal to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. Since its ratification, the treaty has now become the most universal treaty in the history of arms control and non-proliferation.

Hopefully this year's DISSMUN can be a memorable, and unforgettable experience in all our MUN careers - see you all in September!
